The Other Side of "Long Black Veil"

Ten years ago, on a cold dark night
I killed that sonuvabitch, 'neath the town hall light
There were few at the scene, but they all agreed
To take a bribe, and describe someone else

She walks those hills in a long black veil
She visits his grave when the night winds wail
Nobody knows, nobody sees
Nobody knows but me

The judge said "son, what is your alibi
If you were somewhere else, then you won't have to die"
He spoke not a word, thou it meant his life
He'd been in the arms of my wife

Did I applaud?

Now the scaffold is high and eternity's near
She stood in the crowd and shed not a tear
But sometimes at night, when the north wind moans
In a long black veil, she cries ov're his bones

She walks those hills in a long black veil
She visits his grave when the night winds wail
Nobody knows, nobody sees
Nobody knows but me

With apologies to Johnny Cash, and Rhymes everywhere.
